In a new study, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School Spiegelman and Rajesh Rao focused on a protein called PGC-1alpha4 (a recently discovered protein that responds to anti-stress exercises to promote muscle growth) in order to address this issue. They found that PGC-1alpha4 stimulates the secretion of a newly discovered hormone known as Metrnl, which is released into the blood stream and is produced in muscle tissue in mice after exercise and in fatty tissue after cold exposure.
